JW Player Expands Mobile Offering with Launch of iOS SDK, Demonstrating Continued Commitment to JW Everywhere Philosophy

NEW YORK – March 31, 2015 – JW Player, a leading online and mobile video platform and player technology company, today released the first version of their JW Player SDK for iOS, expanding their comprehensive mobile strategy and enabling publishers to make their video content accessible on all mobile platforms. As the consumption of mobile video continues to rise, this software developer kit (SDK) allows publishers to easily build JW Player video playback and advertising features directly into native iOS apps.

“JW Player is continuing to cement itself as a key component within the video landscape and has the largest footprint behind YouTube and Facebook,” says Dave Otten, CEO of JW Player. “We’re committed to our JW Everywhere philosophy, and believe that offering a comprehensive suite of online video products that include full mobile, casting, streaming and content protection will help our customers easily and seamlessly publish content everywhere they choose.”

“JW Player’s mobile SDKs allow us to have consistent HLS adaptive media playback in our native apps on both iOS and Android platforms,” says Shalabh Agarwal, product manager of TO THE NEW, a social and mobile-first digital services provider and JW Player customer. “In addition, their skinning options really enable us to retain full control over our app’s branding.”

Users can implement the JW Player SDK to add video playback and advertising functionality to virtually any iOS app, while retaining full control over the user experience, as well as in-app branding. A full list of features can be found here. This announcement follows the recent release of their JW Player SDK for Android in February.

“Online video playback on phones and tablets is exploding, but users are increasingly watching that content in native apps instead of web browsers,” said John Luther, VP of Connected Devices at JW Player. “JW Player is constantly working to provide the tools our customers need to reach and grow their audience. By building custom apps with our SDKs for iOS and Android, JW Player publishers can get their video content to users on the most popular devices, while also establishing a critical brand presence in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.”

In addition to JW Player’s enhanced mobile offering, the company is also announcing the release of JW Player 6.12. The latest update focuses on upgraded functionality, performance, and user experience through:

  • Support for Microsoft HLS Azure Clear Key AES tokenization for enhanced security
  • Improved HLS adaptive heuristics add predictive analysis to video streams to reduce buffering
  • HLS playback support on Chromecast

JW Player gives publishers full control over their content, from branding the look and feel of the player itself, to customizing advertising options, and accessing analytics to better understand performance. The JW Player open video ecosystem and greater monetization and customization control provides a more profitable choice for a comprehensive video program.
